A Scientifically Grounded Approach to Child Custody
We have devoted more than 30 years to studying what makes for good parenting and, conversely, bad parenting. Virtually every "expert" on parenting ultimately bases his or her assessment of family dynamics on interviews and self-reports from the parents or from paper and pencil tests. We have shown that these approaches are flawed and unfair to parents and their children faced with custody and visitation issues. We have consistently found that parents are often unaware of the quality of their parenting. They are unable to accurately (and without self-servining bias) report how well they monitor their children, how safe they keep them, how well they meet their needs, and how well they enrich their lives. Our approach has been to sytemtically observe parents over an extended period of time and record their interaction with their children. We have carried out observations of thousands of parents in public places, such as parks, recreational centers, malls, stores and restaurants. We are convinced that this is the best and fairest methodology for judging parents in child custody or visitation disputes in family court. Our firm is well equipped to employ the latest scientifically validated methodologies in assisting family courts with these difficult decisions.
